How Taipei Tech integrate customization and automation in 3D printing

“We work on the high performance ceramic under the temperature of 1,600 Celsius degree” said Wang Jia-chang, associate professor at the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, explaining the production process of this high melting point, corrosion resistance, and high hardness industrial material in the Additive Manufacturing Center for Mass Customization Production at Taipei Tech.

The 3D printing technique has been applied to various fields and products such as musical instrument, artificial teeth, and even houses since the price of 3D printer went through a decrease in the early 21th century. But how to use 3D printing technique on high performance ceramic is a rather new technology according to Dr. Wang. In addition to mass produce, the technique also enables a level of customization. “We can make say 30 rose models in a patch and have different characters on each one of them if you like” said Dr. Wang. The latest patent technique has been licensed to Franz, one of the leading Taiwanese companies in art industry.

Another research area in Dr. Wang’s 3D lab is customized shoe-pad. If you ever wonder what your foot pressures are, take off your shoes and step on the machine that can tell you all the information you need to know in order to make shoe-pads accordingly, just for you, of course, from 3D printing. If you look at the revenue of famous sport shoe, the number can be over millions dollars in a year.

The Additive Manufacturing Center for Mass Customization Production wants to create a total solution to the industry. In other words, we want to bring in automation throughout the production process including measure, design, and manufacture said Dr. Wang, one of the four faculties at the center.
